I'm nto a fan of Apple products. Being classified as an I-zombie scares me shitless. But here's my problem. My cell phone is on it's last legs, and I'm switching carriers and can't take it with me. My mp3 player is getting long in the tooth. The 13plus hour battery, now gets about half that. So I'm considering replacing it.

The Iphone seems like a good compromise. I can do both with one device. And rather than download and sync my podcasts, I can download them directly. I spent about an hour at the At&T store looking it over and was impressed.

Anyone have one or have experience with them?

I just got one two weeks ago when my Razr finally gave up the ghost--took it three years, though.

I do believe that the iPhone has pretty much set the standard for "SmartPhone" tek. Very simple and easy to use. Does quite a bit that my old phone didn't, but there are things about it I don't like:

1) Can't take the battery out of it. Have to send it to Apple for replacement of the battery. No big deal, unless you would like to be sure that, for whatever reason, your phone is completely off and not being tracked.

2) No MMS messaging. I don't get it--MMS messaging (texting with multimedia--read, pics) is a basic service, anymore. I was very surprised the iPhone doesn't have this.

3) Short battery life. Like about two-three hours of constant use, if that. Less if you're surfing the web.

4) The autocorrect function can be a bit frustrating sometimes, and the touch-pad can give some issues...Apparently, I've got fat-thumb. With a little practice, you can text pretty damn quick using two thumbs with this thing, but sometimes the errors it makes are frustrating.

5) No movie recording capability.

6) The camera is only so-so.

7) No Cut and Paste functionality while surfing the 'net.

Those are the major downsides. For the positives, the screen is the most vivid I've ever seen on a phone--or on any hand-held device, and it is really easy to go from app to app. This is the first 3G phone I've ever had, and I love having full 'net access wherever...I've surfed the Freestead on this thing, and it works surprisingly well. Apple's browser is called Safari, and it seems to work pretty well. Flash doesn't seem to work, but YouTube does--go figure. It's also GPS enabled, and mine came with GoogleEarth and GoogleMaps, and they work pretty damn well. The app store is filled with stuff for this thing, and I downloaded a free GPS program called MotionGPS Xlite (it was free). Pretty full-featured GPS, and my tests in my vehicle showed it to be accurate to within about twenty feet. Not having used a modern, graphics-driven GPS before, I was pretty enthralled.

I found data entry to be decent, but as I said, it takes a bit to get used to the touch-keyboard. However, I do like this things simplicity. I work on electronics in an R&D environment for a living, so I don't like my tek to be too complicated or intricate--that way lies disaster. Removing all those little buttons, and the associated "slider" or "tilt" hardware makes this thing mechanically more basic, something I take as a plus over other phones with actual micro-keyboards and flimsy, light-duty mechanicals. This thing seems pretty sturdy, though the face is glass.

I'm hearing good things about this Palm Pre, and I believe that Apple is introducing another version of the iPhone soon, so I don't know if now is a good time to buy or what (of course, I found out that little bit of information AFTER I bought mine). I'll say this--the wife wants one, and wants it now. I was actually going to ditch my cell phone, as I really enjoyed the days of not being leashed, but I find it really, really convenient...and the iPhone is even more so. The calculator is like a calculator, the "rolodex" works very well, the photos are easy to navigate, and the apps are plentiful. I'm really likeing mine.

Had to wait two months for our Wammart to get in the 16G 3G that I wanted...and it was pretty expensive--around $500, when it's all said and done (including an upgraded warranty). If you don't already have unlimited data, you'll need to upgrade to that, and that's more per month. Also--there is no "insurance" plan for this phone. You break it or lose it, you're out of luck, Chuck. I hear that AT&T, the only provider of service (currently) for this phone, is selling refurbished 16G iPhones for $150. Might look into that for the wife.

On a 1 to 10, I'd have given my last phone a 7. There are so many more things that the iPhone does that it makes my old Razr seem...well...antiquated. I do miss being able to send pics to the wife, though. We like to send "What are you seeing now?" pics to each other while we're at work (when I'm in an area where I'm allowed to have a phone/digital camera), and not being able to do that seems like Apple really missed the ball on this one. Overall, I give the iPhone a 9. Give me MMS texting back, and it'd be a 10. I won't even complain about the battery life.

I have a lot of experience playing with 'em, but I'll never be able to afford one.

Supposedly tethering will be supported in iPhone 3.0 due out in the near future. Assuming AT&T keeps the data plan at $30/month, that'd be quite the bargain. I'm paying $30 for ClearWire, which feels a lot slower than 3G.

Since I liek gunz, I think this iPhone app is pretty nifty.

Get one. But you might wanna wait till OS 3.0 comes out. Not that this one is bad, but 3.0 is that much better. I have one, and it's better than anything I've owned or played with.

I have had an iPhone for a couple of years now. I had the first gen iPhone and I bought the 3G iPhone when it was released. I think that it is a good phone, and it has a ton of applications that can do quite a bit. The new software is released this summer. If you wait till after the new software is released you may also be able to get new hardware. There's been a lot of speculation that new hardware is also on the way, but I haven't heard anything concrete.

I just got a G1.
I think it's awesome, but compared to the dinosaur I had, most anything would seem so.
I opted not to get the iPhone, none of the carriers have a good plan in my area, and I like to have a real keyboard.

I'm pretty much sold. The Iphone really seems miles ahead of the competition.

And to add depth to my shame, I have a G5 as well. I don't use it, but I keep looking at it and I'm probably going to someday.

It appears to be "available" still... pretty sure some of these are emulations.

Oh, and along the same lines – but actually more on-topic – check these out.

You sit your butt at home
You got no iPhone
