I don't see a story to go along with it; it seems to be just a picture show.

Urban Chickens

According to the brief intro, though, this is apparently an increasingly-popular thing. City dwellers raising chickens in their back yards. I don't know how they avoid the zoning requirements, deed restrictions, noise ordinances, or the random pissed-off neighbors who call the cops at 2am when the rooster crows, but apparently they do.
Peace and plenty; and no killing;
Beef at a groat, and meat at a shilling.
Whisky for nothing, beer at the same.
A bonnie wee wife; and a cosy wee hame.

We had chickens in our backyard in town when I was a kid. It was nice to have fresh eggs. Our neighbors were cool about it and never complained about the rooster crowing at sun rise. My mom was talking about it the other day about missing our chickens.

God, this is something I desperately wish to do, as well as turning our back yard into a garden and maybe a goat for some milk!

you do not need a rooster to get eggs, only to get fertilized eggs.

I ain't no chicken expert, but the people I know who do have chickens say that it's good to keep a rooster around the hens. His presence stimulates egg production and he acts as a bit of a guardian and 'flock leader'. I know one couple who have about a dozen hens and two roosters, and those hens will follow the roosters everywhere, and they're pretty tidy about where they nest to lay their eggs. Another couple I know have only hens, and their hens end up scattered all over the farm every day, laying eggs everywhere. So while a rooster is not "necessary", my observation has been that it's helpful to have one.

Plus, if you want to keep your flock going for more than one generation without buying more chicks, you'll need a rooster. Granted, the lifespan of a chicken is averaged at 7 years. But if you lose any to disease, predators, weather, or other stuff, it's good to have a rooster around to keep the flock populated.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if modern day city dwellers would put up with it. They complain about everything. And roosters crow all hours of the day, including the middle of the night. Especially when something disturbs or rouses them (which will undoubtedly happen in the city, with traffic and sirens and airplane noises and such). I could at best see chickens as a suburban neighborhood thing, but doing it in an urban area would be pretty hard. Especially with health ordinances. It would be great to see people doing it, though.

Yeah, I think I would just go for it and just see what happens. Of course, I should talk with a certain neighbor about it first, with maybe a deal in it for some fresh eggs. :) I'm not sure if you could say I live in the city... I'm like five minutes from downtown but I'm sitting on an acre!

Goat's one of those meats that should be more popular, but isn't. Mmm, goat.

I love goat. It's like lamb, only much stronger. A lot of the Hispanic meat markets around here sell it.

Ha, when I went to NYC with my neighbor last year I got a gyro. As Im eating this thing I notice that I couldn't place the meat (shaddup zen/geo). So I tell my neighbor that I have no idea what the hell I'm eating, Ive had all the usual meats plus deer, rabbit, squirrel, possum, coon, turtle, snake, but have never tasted this. He tells me it's lamb (which I never had) and says "aye, youse wanna piss 'em off? Ask what alley dey stole da goat from to make this gyro"

There's a local Greek restaurant that I go to for lunch sometimes. Their gyros are to die for. And they use lamb too. It's a wonderful meat. Very tender.

But it's not goat meat. It's sheep.

Goat meat is pretty popular in Mexican food (cabrito) and it's quite tasty, if a bit strong. I've heard that it's becoming very popular in yuppie circles too; so much so that suppliers are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

Y'know what's awesome? Goatse! It's a traditional goat dish and it looks spectacular on a plate. Seriously - google image goatse when you're deciding what's for dinner. It'll definitely make you change your menu plan.

Dumb enough to have never tried goatse! We should let the newer members decide. Go find some pictures of goatse and tell us what you think.

When I was a kid, my neighbor had ducks in their backyard. It started as their kid's school project, but they liked having them. I also had some neighbors that kept ducks and chickens they got at the easter celebrations at church.

I have a friend who raised goats until recently, and she talks about goat meat all the time and how much they like it..
